Why Do You Need a Diagnostic Hearing Evaluation Performed by an Audiologist?

Why choose an audiologist?

At Roseville Diagnostic Hearing Center, our patients and referring physicians can have the peace of mind that he/she is being tested by a licensed audiologist. In California, Audiologists are the only ones licensed to perform diagnostic hearing evaluations. Audiologists undergo extensive training and must hold a doctoral degree in audiology effective 2008 or master’s degree in audiology (prior to 2008). Hearing aid dispensers are NOT licensed to perform diagnostic hearing evaluations and therefore are not allowed to charge a fee for testing. Hearing aid dispensers must state that the “test” is to “determine if you could be helped by a hearing aid”.

More importantly, be aware that some local centers don’t always have an audiologist perform your diagnostic hearing tests. They are performed by oto-techs and bill under an otolaryngologist (ENT). Oto-techs typically go through a 2 ½ day training to perform basic hearing test and are not licensed to perform diagnostic hearing evaluations, yet they are tasked to perform full diagnostic hearing evaluations. Physicians are basing their clinical judgement for treatment and recommendations based on your test results. Make sure that you have a reliable and thorough diagnostic hearing evaluation performed by an audiologist!

Audiologists are licensed and trained to manage many areas such as administering comprehensive hearing evaluations, test middle ear function (eardrum mobility and acoustic reflexes), speech understanding and inner ear function. Audiologists can identify, diagnose, recommend treatment, select and fit hearing devices for pediatric and adult populations. We are proud to say that at Roseville Diagnostic Hearing Center, our patients are getting the best quality hearing healthcare!
